Day 6 of 30 Paintings in 30 days

So here it is another oil pastel portrait of a little girl on Canson Mi-Teintes (9x12 inches). Again from the site PMP. I think I captured her likeness but I painted her much older....I painted her eyes too high on the face and so she looks older. But overall I'm happy with her skintones and hair.

I did minimize/blend some of the white highlights in her shirt (not shown here) because I think they were calling too much attention.

Day 5 of 30 Paintings in 30 days

So I went with another portrait in oil pastels on Canson Mi-Teintes (9x12 inches). A black teen girl with gorgeous skintones from a PMP photo again. I could see all sorts of colors in her skin which excited me but was difficult to capture...even harder to capture on photo...sigh!

Colors are a little bit less muted especially those oranges in her cheeks but oh so hard to correct. Her face is also a bit more elongated in the painting.

Day 4 of 30 Paintings in 30 days

And here comes another portrait again from the website PMP. Another girl portrait in oil pastels on Canson Mi-Teintes paper (9x10 inches - cropped).

I had a hard time with this one since the source photo clearly showed green reflections from her hat into her skin. I also drew it very small on the paper and ended up using some oil-based colored pencils for some of her tiny facial features. Oh well, on to the next one!

Day 3 of 30 Paintings in 30 days

And here comes another portrait again from the website PMP (thanks a lot to Viacheslav for his amazing photos). Another girl portrait in oil pastels on Canson Mi-Teintes paper (9x12 inches)

Notes: It's very hard to photograph portraits because first of all the camera lens deforms the face, camera doesn't capture all subtle shade changes, my camera oversaturates pictures.
Also her neck is long as in the Mannerism style.

Day 2 of 30 Paintings in 30 days

This is my painting for day 2 of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. Here is another portrait in oil pastels--a flower girl--based on a photo by Alina the website PMP (http://www.paintmyphoto.ning.com). It is 9x12 inches on cream Canson Mi-Teintes paper. Note that colors are a bit less saturated in real life (particularly her lips).

Day 1 of 30 Paintings in 30 days

So I've joined Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge starting today January 1st. I've decided to practice portraits (and other themes you'll hear about later) this month. Here is my second portrait in oil pastels--a Rasta boy--based on a photo by Li Newfrom the website http://www.paintmyphoto.ning.com). It is 9x12 inches on terracota Canson Mi-Teintes paper.

Below is my very first oil pastel portrait of a girl also from PMP.

Here's a little postcard I made

So here's a little postcard I made for "A Good Day for Mail" Facebook Group Halloween Exchange.  I used the Gelli Arts plate with a couple of handmade masks. Then painted the pumpkin on top.

Good news - First place in two art contests

It has been a while since I have updated my blog, but I thought the recent news deserve some mentioning. I have recently been notified that two of my paintings have won first place at art contests.

My watercolor painting of an accordion player in Old San Juan won First Place at the Martin F./Weber Summer Facebook art contest. The prize consists of $500 in art materials from the company, which is awesome since I use their water-soluble oils woils.

My oil pastel painting "Mangoes" won First Place in the Associate category of the Oil Pastel Society "Journey 2013" online show. The prize is a check for $150.

A portrait and a peacock

Here are two recent watercolors on 9x12 inch 140 lb. CP paper from Strathmore 400 series. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this paper behaves for the price. I will definitely be using it more for sketches and practice.

For Valeria's portrait I added some whimsical elements based on reference photos from the PMP. The peacock's reference is also from PMP.  In the peacock I used some watercolor pencils and some white gouache as well, so it's basically a mixed media piece.

Hope you like them!
